毫无疑问，科技与技术改变了社会、改变了生活，甚至影响了政治。有数据显示，在2008年，有46%的美国民众通过互联网、email或者文字短信(包括IM)来获得、分享和浏览大选新闻。在网上最流行的活动就是观看在线视频和登陆社交网络进行互动。而这些行为是2004年的2到3倍！让我们一起来看一组大选相关的数据，以了解社会媒体发展的情况：

有35%的美国民众说他们经常观看政治性质的网络视频——这一数据是2004年的近三倍。
有10%的美国民众说他们经常登陆Facebook或者MySpace性质的社交网络了解信息及进行互动。
有2/3的30岁以下的美国网民在社交网络有自己的主页，这其中有一半称经常使用社交网络来获取和分享大选信息。
有6%的美国民众通过网络参与了大选，这一数据在2004年只有2%。

在社交媒体上(Facebook和MySpace)：Barack Obama比John McCain的好友多380%；
在视频分享网站YouTube上：Barack Obama的视频浏览量是John McCain的1000%；
在微博客Twitter上：Barack Obama的关注者是John McCain的240倍。
